The Latest Casual Playlist Sparks Intense Debates Over Bots, XP Rewards, and Queue Times

Recently, the game developers launched a new game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but features a few notable changes:

  • Each team includes just 8 human participants, with the rest made up of 32 bots.
  • Activities done by human gamers award full XP, while AI activities provide lower rewards.
  • Only two locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
  • Elements like Player tags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.

In short, the playlist delivers on its name: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, since it gives additional choices for players seeking different ways to have fun with the game. However, gaming history have taught us anything, it's that you can't please everyone. In other words, many BF6 fans are upset.

Player Responses: Anger to Praise

"Gamers prefer human opponents. Don't repeat the mistakes of your rivals," reads one reply to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking idea," comments a different user. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player notes, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and someone else lists everything they believe to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Resolve glitches, fix drone glitch, correct rocket mechanics, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this bot mode."

On the other hand, amid the criticism, some gamers explaining how much they're liking the recent addition. "It's very fun to warm up, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," reads a forum post. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this game all the time. Let them find a middle ground," states another. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is perfect for me," while someone else applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Valid Criticisms and Player Input

All that said, players have valid points to criticize Casual Breakthrough. Some users have highlighted that it will make queue times even longer for different playlists due to the sheer number of playlists currently available. Similarly, certain regions already encounter mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a required amount of real players, even though it primarily centers on combat against bots.

Finally, one of the biggest grievances is that Battlefield Portal was meant to offer full XP, even against bots, but that got canned when they tried to remove bot farms from the system. Thus this new playlist feels like the community compromising halfway, as per a Reddit comment. Another labels this mode as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, what prompted them to adjust it?"

Looking Ahead: Adjustments Be Made?

If Battlefield Studios has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it's that they're listening and acting on player input. Assignments that were overly hard were adjusted rapidly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their standards, they won't be shy to make further modifications.
