Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Jail Diary Detailing Three Weeks Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir in the coming weeks called Notes from a Cell, chronicling his time endured in custody.

This news was made just 11 days after Sarkozy was released while he contests the guilty verdict on charges of unlawful coordination regarding a scheme to obtain political financing linked to the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Solitary Musings

“In prison one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he writes in a preview, indicating the memoir will focus on his reflections while in seclusion instead of extensive analysis regarding the packed and struggling jail system in France.

“I forget silence, which is missing in La Santé, where noise is endless commotion,” he adds. “The din is alas constant. But, just like the desert, personal reflection is fortified in prison.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

At his release request hearing, Sarkozy had appeared remotely from a room in prison, describing his time inside as draining. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who helped make this nightmare manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a hardship I must endure. I confess it’s hard, deeply straining. It has an impact on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”

Historical Context

Sarkozy, who led the nation for a five-year term, set a precedent as past president in the European Union and the initial post-WWII figure from France to serve time in prison.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he intended to spend the period for authoring a memoir.

Cell Library

It is not certain did he manage to review and analyze the volumes he brought with him: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the famous story, where a blameless person is sentenced to jail but escapes to take revenge.

Life in Confinement

The former leader remained in solitary confinement to protect him in a room of about nine sq metres with his own shower and toilet at the correctional facility located in the capital. Two bodyguards were stationed in the next cell.

Sources mentioned his diet consisted only yoghurts during his stay due to concerns meals provided could have been tampered with. Options were available to cook for himself but refused this, based on unnamed sources. It is uncertain if he will detail his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain daily throughout the jail term, informed the court his safety would improve outside jail rather than in custody. “There were death threats, heard shouts after dark plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Charges and Sentence

Sarkozy went to prison in late October following a French court gave him a five-year sentence for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to secure campaign funds during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and a fresh trial set for next spring.
