Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – However It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.
A new acronym came to light a couple of months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals including child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for physicians to attend to a minor who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.
A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. Officials rejects these allegations, just as it refutes everything it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, although several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony looks like.
Eurovision, of course excluded Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems completely different.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what seems to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Show Goes On Amidst Staggering Tragedy
The contest marks seven decades next year – almost double the projected longevity of a person in Gaza now. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A competition that was originally built on peace has now become a cynical way to sanitize military aggression.
