Area Police
Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations indicate the substance was most likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the public for information.
A high-ranking official stated the incident left him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of migrant background in five years prior.
