Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
